Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Wayside, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Wayside that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
