Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Brian Head, UT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Brian Head which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
