Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Clawson, UT.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Clawson which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
