The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehab programs, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Atlantic are programs who are officially allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
