Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Brooke, VA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Brooke that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
