Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Bumpass, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Bumpass which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
