The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Chesapeake are programs who are legally allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.
An opioid rehabilitation facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year.
