There is outpatient and inpatient drug and alcohol treatment, but there are some sub-categories of outpatient drug treatment in DHS to choose from. Regular outpatient care is not invasive and clients can usually go to therapy and counseling a few times a week. Comprehensive outpatient programs provide therapy and counseling similar to regular outpatient, but on a more intensive schedule that also allows time for work and family life.

These programs also usually offer a wider spectrum of care that typical outpatient may not offer, including alternative therapies, medication management, and dual-diagnosis treatment.

It isn't uncommon for clients in outpatient drug treatment or after treatment in outpatient drug or alcohol rehab to   relapse. In these situations inpatient rehab would correctly be the next logical step.
