SAMHSA Certified Opioid Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - DHS, VA.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in DHS are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab program is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of accreditation that was given.
