Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Dryden, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Dryden that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
