The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Ebony are programs who are officially permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medicine like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment facility can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab center is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation that was given.
