Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Ewing, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Ewing that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
