Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Fort Eustis, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Fort Eustis which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
