Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Hudgins, VA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Hudgins which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
