The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Maryus are programs which are legally allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also get ancillary benefits aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab center can get their initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
