Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Mavisdale, VA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mavisdale which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
