One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. An opioid rehabilitation center can get their initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the kind of certification it has been given.
