Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Sedley, VA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Sedley which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
