Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Shacklefords, VA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Shacklefords which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
