The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab centers in St. Paul are programs which are officially allowed to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary benefits in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification that was given.
