Regular outpatient treatment is minimally invasive and individuals can usually go to therapy and counseling a few times per week. Intensive outpatient programs provide therapy and counseling much like normal outpatient, but on a more intensive pace which also accommodates family and work life.
An outpatient drug and alcohol rehab option referred to as Day Treatment or Partial Hospitalization is the most intensive type of outpatient treatment available. Clients can go to a sober-living program or home at the end of each day, but will spend the majority of their time participating in outpatient rehab services. Day treatment and partial hospitalization outpatient drug or alcohol rehab is perfect for individuals who have newly finished an inpatient program, but still need to maintain a strong system of support while they become more comfortable with a sober lifestyle. These rehabs also usually offer a wider array of care that regular outpatient may not provide, including medication management, dual diagnosis treatment, and alternative therapies.
It isn't uncommon for clients in outpatient drug treatment or following rehab in outpatient alcohol and drug treatment to experience a relapse. In these cases inpatient rehab would correctly be the next logical step.
