The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in University Of Richmond are programs that are officially permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been given.
