The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in Brownsville are programs which are legally permitted to give out the drugs used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary benefits in addition to medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the kind of certification it has been granted.
