The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in East Berkshire are programs who are officially allowed to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get auxiliary services aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment program can receive initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
