Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Franklin, VT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Franklin that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
