The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Lunenburg are programs which are officially allowed to distribute the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab center is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the type of accreditation that was given.
