Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Northfield, VT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Northfield that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
