The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Peru are programs which are legally allowed to give out the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary benefits aside from medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of accreditation that was granted.
