The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid treatment programs, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Reading are programs which are officially permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab program can receive initial approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of accreditation that was given.
