The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab facilities in Richmond are programs which are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification it has been granted.
