Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Richmond, VT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Richmond that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
