The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Washington are programs that are officially allowed to distribute the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits in addition to medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment facility can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state.
