There are addiction programs offered in or near Bellevue that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
