American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment instead of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Camano Island face is access to effective treatment facilities, especially those who live in rural areas. Programs offering substance abuse rehabilitation services in rural regions commonly are not capable of offering strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique demographic including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which types of treatment services are an option for them and through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
