Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Colfax, WA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Colfax which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
