There are addiction programs available in or near Lakewood that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
