At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
