American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is definitely a need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Lind face is access to effective rehab programs, particularly those who live in rural regions. Programs offering substance abuse rehab services in rural regions may not be able to offer support aimed at meeting the needs of this distinctive demographic including addiction treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to find out which treatment services are available to them and through which treatment facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
