There are programs available in or near Neah Bay which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
