Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Orcas, WA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Orcas which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
