One of the outpatient treatment options for individuals in Spokane battling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are certified to administer certain medications to opioid dependent people, many of which are opioids themselves and are addiction. In low enough doses however, the client does not experience being high but also does not experience acute cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug tried for this purpose, but there are other choices currently to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the drug, which is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the drug is about $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone that can only be dispensed in highly well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is around just under $300 monthly for the generic version of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, which is a drug that reverses the effects of opioids. An individual taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken daily, and is priced approximately $450 a month. Naltrexone is another drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned here it's an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 monthly.
