The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in St. John are programs who are officially allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary benefits in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
