There are programs offered in or near Stehekin that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
