American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Sumas face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who live in rural areas. Facilities offering drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be set up to provide strategic planning designed to meet the needs of this distinctive group of people including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which treatment services are available to them and through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
