There are addiction programs offered in or near Westport that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
