American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges.
