Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Athelstane, WI.

There are recovery programs available in or near Athelstane that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
