Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Avoca, WI.

There are recovery programs available in or near Avoca which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
