Drug and alcohol treatment services are offered in a wide variety of formats, so there is truly something for everyone in Belgium. Treatment services can be done in both an inpatient and outpatient basis, where outpatient services range from 1 or 2 days of treatment per week to intensive outpatient treatment which is available daily. Outpatient treatment services range from individual counseling and group counseling, to more advanced psychotherapies to modify behavior and motivate clients to stay sober.
Inpatient and residential treatment is there for people who suffer with more extensive histories of substance abuse, spanning from 30 day programs to 90 day programs. Some programs have what is called a Therapeutic Community model, where clients may stay as long as a year in some cases. The longer the client stays in in rehab and benefits from services and a clean and sober environment, the higher their chances of remaining sober and being able stay that way without requiring that robust system of support. Services at a residential or inpatient drug and alcohol rehab center are usually more diversified and can encompass treatment for addiction but also other co-occurring mental health disorders. Aftercare services are essential even following long-term treatment, and many programs recommend continued participation in the program for some months until the person has progressed into a drug free way of life.
