There are recovery programs offered in or near Big Bend that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
